Choosing the right slatted base is essential to ensuring that your mattress is well supported and that you get the best possible sleep. Between the different types of slats, materials and manufacturing standards, it can be difficult to find your way around. In this article, we'll help you choose the ideal slatted base to suit your needs and your mattress.
- A slatted base with an inlay allows the mattress to be inserted slightly into the structure of the slatted base, offering greater stability and optimum support.
Ideal for classic, minimalist use, it is the perfect replacement for bulky beds.
-A slatted base without an inlay allows the mattress to be positioned directly on the surface of the base, giving a more open feel. (Beware of the overall dimensions of this type of base).
Ideal for transforming a 1-seater base into a 2-seater base without having a ‘gap’ between the two beds, as with our Twin bed.
The choice between these two options depends on your preferences and the type of bed frame you use. Most of our slatted bed bases are built-in, except for the following models: Kit France, Twin
Please note that if you opt for a box spring without an inlay, the mattress you choose must be EN 1334 standard so that it does not protrude from your box spring.
When you choose a slatted base, it's important to check that it meets the EN 1334 standard. This European standard guarantees that the slatted base complies with standard dimensions that are compatible with the majority of standard mattresses on the market. So you can avoid unpleasant surprises by ensuring that your slat base and mattress fit perfectly. Whether you choose a 140x190 slatted bed base, a 140x200 slatted bed base, or other sizes, this standard ensures a risk-free choice.
Things to remember:
- Distinguish between the bed dimensions and the actual dimensions of the product.
- Applies to mattresses and only to slatted bases that are not built-in.
- The actual size must be 0 to 2 cm smaller than the bedding size (e.g. for a 140x200 cm bed base, the actual size of the bed base is 138x198 cm).
If in doubt, contact the manufacturer for confirmation of the actual overall dimensions of the product concerned.
The choice between soft and rigid slats depends on the comfort you want and the type of mattress:
- Soft / active slats: offer dynamic support and adapt to body movements. They are particularly suitable for foam or latex mattresses, as they allow better air circulation and cushioning.
Our soft slatted bed bases: Kit France 1 place or 2 places, Kit Noé 1 place or 2 places, Twin bed, Viking, Happy, ARC, Plateform, Solido, King Solid
- Rigid / passive slats: these guarantee firmer support and are recommended for spring mattresses or for those who prefer firmer support.
Our rigid slatted bases: Confort, King Size and Maxi trundle bed
Our advice:
-For people who suffer from back pain, it's best to opt for a firm mattress with rigid slats.
-For people with a preference for firm (or even very firm) bedding, we recommend opting for a rigid slatted base and a mattress with a firm support.
Opting for a solid wood bed base means choosing robust, environmentally-friendly furniture. We only use wood from managed forests, guaranteeing a renewable resource and a controlled ecological footprint. Thanks to the solidity of solid wood, our bed bases offer superior longevity, reducing the need for frequent replacement and cutting down on waste.
All our solid wood bed bases, including the 160x200 slatted bed base, are treated with a water-based finish, except for the simply sanded ‘raw’ version, with no VOCs to preserve healthy indoor air. A+ certified, they guarantee minimal emissions of harmful substances, reducing the risk of allergies and irritations. An ideal choice for a healthier, more soothing night's sleep.
A well thought-out leg height is crucial to guarantee both stability and comfort. With a standard height of 20 cm for our 140x190 slatted base and other sizes, you benefit from excellent stability that prevents the slatted base from sagging, while ensuring optimum ventilation of the mattress for longer life. The height of the legs for slatted bases also makes it easier to access the bed, for everyday comfort. What's more, this small space under the bed makes it easier to vacuum or slip in a few small items, helping to keep your bedroom clean and tidy.
In conclusion, the choice of slatted base is essential to guarantee the right support for your mattress and optimise the quality of your sleep. Whether you opt for soft or rigid slats, make sure you select a slatted base that complies with the EN 1334 standard for perfect compatibility with your mattress. Eco-friendly materials, such as solid wood from controlled forests, ensure durability and respect for the environment. In addition, a healthy A+ certified finish protects indoor air quality, creating a healthier environment for your sleep. Finally, don't overlook the importance of the height of the legs, which contributes to stability, ventilates the mattress and optimises the space under the bed. By making an informed choice, you're investing in a bed base that's durable, comfortable and respectful of your health and the environment.
