How do you transform two single beds into a double bed?
In many tourist accommodations, sleeping arrangements have to adapt to a variety of needs: couples, friends, families, solo travellers... This diversity requires a certain flexibility in the layout of rooms, particularly when it comes to the choice of beds. This is where twin bed comes into his own. Modular and practical, they allow you to respond to every situation without having to multiply the furniture. But when you have to move from a configuration with two single beds to a comfortable wooden double bed frame, a few practical questions arise: will the mattresses line up properly? Will they be comfortable enough? Is there a durable solution that's easy to install?
What is a twin bed?
Twin bed is two single beds of the same size, placed side by side in a bedroom. Very common in tourist accommodation, they make it easy to adapt the layout to the needs of the occupants: a double bed for couples or two separate beds for friends, colleagues or children. Their main advantage is their modularity: you can change from two single beds to one double slat bed in a few simple steps, without having to change the furniture. It's a practical solution for optimising space while offering greater booking flexibility.
However, not all 1-seater wooden bed with slats are designed to be placed close together: for a stable and comfortable result, the structures must be compatible and allow the mattresses to be stuck together without any gaps or awkward edges compromising comfort.
Our practical and sustainable solutions
At ABC Meubles, we've designed products to offer this flexibility, while guaranteeing sturdiness and quality of sleep. There are two options for easily moving from two single beds to a comfortable wooden double bed frame:
The Twin bed
Twin beds are two independent single beds, designed to be used together or separately. Their non-recessed design means that the mattresses can be placed closer together without any gaps disturbing comfort. They are supplied with a binding foot, which holds the slat bed together to ensure perfect stability. It's a turnkey solution that's easy to install.

The Twin bed is available in several sizes, offering great flexibility of adaptation:
- 80x190 x2, i.e. 160x190 cm
- 90x190 x2, i.e. 180x190 cm
- 80x200 x2, i.e. 160x200 cm
- 90x200 x2, i.e. 180x200 cm
What's more, the Twin bed includes both beds and a binder foot to hold it all together. It is therefore sold as a complete kit, guaranteeing quick and stable installation.
The kit France
The Kit France is another modular slat bed, popular with B&Bs and tourist accommodation. Like the Twin beds, the mattresses can be installed edge to edge, without any hollows or offsets. The Kit France offers great flexibility without sacrificing quality.

The dimensions of the Kit France kit also follow the same configurations:
- 70x190 x2, i.e. 140x190 cm
- 80x190 x2, i.e. 160x190 cm
- 90x190 x2, i.e. 180x190 cm
- 80x200 x2, i.e. 160x200 cm
- 90x200 x2, i.e. 180x200 cm
➡️ However, unlike the Twin beds, the France kit is sold individually. To make up a set as for the Twin, you will need to order 2 base units + 1 binder foot.
All our beds are made from solid wood in our Normandy workshop, with water-based varnishes that contain no solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), for healthier, more environmentally-friendly interiors.
What's the difference between the two models?
The main difference lies in the presence of a headboard: Twin bed is equipped with one, while the Kit France has none.
Common problems when forming a double bed with 2 single beds
A difference in sleeping height
A difference in height between the two beds can make sleeping uncomfortable. Make sure that the slatted beds are the same height and that the mattresses are of a similar thickness.
Mattresses shift
Mattresses sometimes slip during the night. To limit this movement, choose mattresses that are heavy enough and use a large fitted sheet or mattress topper to hold them in place.
A gap between the two mattresses
The hollow in the centre of the mattress can make it uncomfortable, especially for a couple. Adding a love bridge (foam mattress wedge) will smooth the surface and prevent the feeling of separation. Ideally, you should choose a slatted bede with no underpinning, so that the mattresses can fit snugly together.
Mattresses that are too big
If you opt for some of our box springs, please make sure that your mattresses comply with the EN 1334 standard. Our slatted bases are designed to comply with this standard, which means that they can be up to 2cm smaller than the dimensions indicated. If your mattresses don't comply with this standard, they'll stick out (because they won't be up to 2cm smaller) and the result won't be optimal.
To sum up
Transforming two single beds into one large wooden double bed frame is an economical, practical and modular solution, provided you have the right furniture. With our Twin beds or France kits, you gain flexibility without compromising on comfort, durability or aesthetics. It's the ideal solution for anyone who wants to optimise the way they welcome their guests, while adapting to their individual needs.
