Maintaining Wooden Furniture
A wooden piece of furniture is "alive" and noble. It is important to know how to maintain it so that it remains as beautiful as possible for as long as possible. But be careful, a varnished wooden piece of furniture is not maintained in the same way as a rough wooden piece of furniture.
Here are a few tips to save you time and money.
Not to do:
-Do not use abrasive sponges to clean varnished wooden furniture, as they may scratch the wood.
-Do not use bleach or any other chemical or acid product.
To clean it :
We advise you to use a slightly damp sponge to clean it. Then you can use a soft dry cloth to polish the surface of the furniture. When cleaning varnished furniture, avoid rubbing too hard. Use gentle movements or dab lightly. You don't need to use special products, as they are often expensive and will make your furniture dirty. If the furniture is really dirty, you can add a little well wrung out washing-up liquid with your sponge.
Cleaning rough wooden furniture :
A rough wooden furniture is a piece of furniture that has not been varnished, painted, waxed or oiled. Keeping the wood in its natural state gives it a beautiful appearance, but it is not protected against external risks (marks, stains, dust). Raw wood furniture is more vulnerable. The advantage of raw wood is that you can oil, paint or varnish it, the choice is yours. It is always possible to sand it afterwards and change it according to your taste at the time.
Not to do:
You can't clean raw wood furniture the same way as varnished furniture. Do not use water. The water will be absorbed by the wood and stain it.
To clean it:
Whether your furniture is made of pine, oak, teak, walnut or cherry, you can clean it by rubbing the surface with a brush soaked in black soap diluted in warm water. If your furniture is really stained, you can use sandpaper to gently sand the wood but always in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging it.
Be careful:
Avoid placing furniture in direct sunlight (blinds and curtains can be used to filter the sun's rays). Over time, too much light on your wooden furniture can darken pale species and discolour dark ones. It can also discolour your varnish, stain or paint. Wood is vulnerable to moisture; too much variation in humidity can cause cracks or splits in the wood. In addition, in a very humid environment, there is a risk of mildew. Also, avoid placing your furniture near a heat source. Water spilled on a piece of furniture can also cause whitish stains.
To handle them :
Avoid moving your loaded furniture. If you can empty your furniture, remove drawers, shelves and doors. When moving them, do not grab your furniture by the top, but by the legs or belt. It is better to lift the furniture than to drag it across the floor.
